Taking a look at the history of the online payment service, you can learn a lot about the background:

  • The online payment service came into being in 2000 when Confinity and X.com merged. This was a payment methods company and an internet financial services provider. Founders are Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek and Elon Musk.
  • In October 2002, eBay bought PayPal for 1.5 billion US dollars because it expected many advantages for its users. Since 2004, the PayPal website has also been available in Germany, where it was also initially integrated into eBay.
  • Ebay advertised PayPal so that the number of users rose to around 16 million users by 2013. In Germany, PayPal users can pay via direct debit, credit card, online bank transfer and Pay-Pal credit via their app account.
  • In 2015, a separation took place between eBay and PayPal. Now it is an independent company.
