iPhone 7: Change camera settings – this is how to do it

by Pramith

You can take very solid photos with the iPhone 7 camera, and if you change the camera settings, you can even get a little more out of your snaps.

iPhone 7: Change basic camera settings

You can only change a few settings in the iPhone 7 camera app itself. Nevertheless, we’ll start with the basics here.

  • Just above the shutter button you will find the different modes of the camera. In addition to the normal photo and video mode, these also include a mode for time-lapse and panorama pictures.
  • Bottom left you can see the last picture taken, here you can access the gallery. At the bottom right you will find a button to switch between the front and main camera.
  • In normal photo mode, you will find more settings at the top of the screen. Use the flash icon to turn the flash on and off permanently or let the iPhone decide for itself depending on the brightness.
  • Using the next button, you can take a so-called live picture. These are normal photos, but they can also be played back as a short video. In this case, a short sequence is recorded before and after the photo.
  • Using the clock symbol, you can set a timer to 3 or 10 seconds. The photo is then always taken with a time delay.
  • Use the button at the top right of the picture to place a filter over the picture. This allows you to achieve different effects.

iPhone 7 camera: switching between video resolutions

The iPhone has many more settings for the camera, but they are not in the camera app itself.

  • First open the Settings app on your iPhone. Right at the bottom you will find the category “Camera”. Here you will find numerous settings.
  • In the “Formats” section you have the choice between “High Efficiency” and “Maximum Compatibility”. In the first mode, the images are saved in good quality as space-saving as possible in HEIF/HEVC format. However, this type of image is not supported by some other devices and systems such as Windows. In the second mode, the images are saved in JPEG/H.264 format, which takes up a little more memory but can be played back by any device.
  • In the “Record Video” and “Record Slo-Mo” sections, you can adjust the desired picture quality. The preset quality is usually already optimal.
  • If you select the option “Scan QR codes”, QR codes are automatically detected as soon as you focus on the code via the camera.
  • If you switch on the “Grid” option, you will receive an image split according to the rule of thirds. This allows you to better align your motifs.
  • The option “Mirror front photos” mirrors the selfie camera so that, for example, texts can also be read via the front camera.
