SIM card for Canada: offers and tips

If you’re spending your next holiday or even a longer period of time in Canada, you may want to get a new SIM card for your stay. We show you what to look for when buying and where to get the cards.

SIM card for Canada: What to look out for

  • Due to the size of Canada, the many wireless carriers concentrate in certain areas. No provider is represented in all 10 provinces. Therefore, only use providers that are represented in the desired regions.
  • In Canada, mobile phone contracts are much more common than prepaid plans. For this reason, the prices in the prepaid models are not too attractive. However, a mobile phone contract with a term of 24 to 36 months is not even worthwhile for Work & Traveller.
  • Network coverage often leaves much to be desired, especially in rural areas. If you are going to be in the countryside for a longer period of time, you should check the network coverage of the respective provider in this region in advance.

Buy a SIM card in Canada: Where and at what price?

  • You can get a SIM card directly from the mobile phone provider’s shop. You will find such a shop in every shopping mall. Alternatively, you can also find them in electronics stores, supermarkets, at the post office and at the kiosk.
  • As in Germany, you can usually get the SIM card for around 10 CAD – about 6.50 euros – with the same amount of starting credit. Mobile data volume is unfortunately relatively expensive. 100 MB costs well over 10 CAD euros. One GB can cost around 30 CAD per month.
  • Alternatively, you can also get a SIM card before your trip. You can find one at Verivox, among other places. However, the costs here are always a little higher, so you can get away cheaper by buying directly on site
