You can easily unlock your Mac using your Apple Watch. We show you how to log in to your MacBook and confirm passwords with your Apple Watch in this article.

Unlock Mac with the Apple Watch

The feature that makes unlocking your Mac through the Apple Watch possible is called Auto Unlock. This feature is available for all Apple Watches running watchOS 3 or later and devices running macOS Sierra or later.

  • Activate both WLAN and Bluetooth on your Mac. You can do this from the top menu bar or System Preferences.
  • Then enable two-factor authentication for your Apple ID and make sure your Mac and Apple Watch are logged into the same Apple ID.
  • Your Apple Watch must have a lock code to use the feature for security reasons. If you don’t have a lock code yet, we’ll explain how to set one up in the next article.
Once you have completed the first two steps, open the “Security” menu in the system settings.
  • There, check “Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac” or “Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac” – the wording differs depending on your Mac’s operating system.
  • The first time you use the feature and if your Mac was shut down or logged off, you will need to manually enter your password once. Afterwards, you only need to wake your Mac from sleep mode and it will be automatically unlocked.
