WhatsApp: No more sound – what you can do

by Flo

If you no longer have sound on WhatsApp, it is usually due to certain settings. The problem can affect the sound of notifications as well as the sound of voice messages and videos.

WhatsApp no sound anymore: Set notifications on Android

If you wish, WhatsApp will make a sound or vibrate when you get a new message in one of your chats. So first check if notifications are turned on.

  • Open the settings of your Android smartphone.
  • Now go to “Apps” and scroll down to “WhatsApp”. Move the “Notifications” switch to “On”.
  • Below this you will find individual settings for chats, group chats & Co. Make sure that all notifications are allowed here as well.
  • There is the option “Do not disturb”. It puts your phone on silent so that even if notifications are allowed, there is no sound. Access the control centre by swiping from top to bottom.
  • Next, check that your phone is set to silent in general. Swipe down from the top twice and check that “Tones” is disabled. Slide the slider to the centre.
  • If your videos and voicemails are silent, also swipe down twice from the top and slide the slider in the middle for “Media”. If you don’t find a volume control here, go to “Sounds” in the Settings app. Alternatively, use the volume buttons on the device while playing a video or a voice message.
