Heat pool water: These are your options

by Corinna

For paddling fun in your own pool, you should heat the water. This can even extend the swimming season. We present four ways to do this.

Warm the water in the pool with a cover

Put the cover on and you’re done – that’s how you could describe this solution. Because a dark cover on the pool attracts the sunlight and the heat. This warms the water underneath. In addition, the cover stores the heat in the pool longer and prevents it from cooling down too quickly. Another advantage: the cover keeps dirt out of the water. These models are available:

  • Tarpaulin: The easiest way to cover your pool is to use a tarpaulin that fits it. Pay attention to the dimensions and a dark colour.
  • Automatic pool covers: At the push of a button, this pool cover retracts and extends. For larger installations, they are often custom-made. This is expensive, but in addition to protection against heat loss, it also offers greater safety. This is because many of these covers can withstand greater weight and thus prevent accidents involving children.
  • Domes: There are also dome-like covers that heat the water naturally. They are simply slid on and are characterised by ease of use.

Favourable hot water thanks to solar pool heating

You can harness the power of the sun with a solar pool heater. Especially in summer, the sun shines strongly and thus plays out its strength. In bad weather, however, this method does not work as effectively. Also pay attention to the connection requirements of the respective models. Most need to be connected to a filter device to transport the water.

  • Solar mat: This form of solar pool heating is already available at a relatively low price. It is connected after the filter system. If necessary, several mats can also be connected to one another to achieve a higher heating output.
  • Collectors: What works on the house roof also works for the pool. Solar collectors concentrate the power of the sun. Many models are robust and feature a large flow rate.
  • Solar tarpaulin: Like a foil, the solar tarpaulin can be cut to the dimensions of the pool with scissors. It can be used solo or in combination with a solar mat or collector. A pool should be protected from heat loss, especially at night – a tarpaulin does a good job here.

A heat pump ensures pleasant water temperatures all year round

Air heat pumps are not cheap to buy, but they can be used all year round. They are also easy to connect. They are simply placed on the ground and connected to the pool with a nozzle. The following tips will help you get the most out of your pool:

  • Heat pumps take in the outside air, heat it and pass it on to the pool. This is how the water is heated. Therefore, these units should preferably be operated when the temperature is high during the day.
  • There are also models with a cooling function. This allows you to lower the temperature in the pool on particularly hot days.
  • Most heat pumps have a maximum volume that they can heat. When buying, therefore, look at the litre specification.

Electric pool heater is inexpensive to buy

Electric pool heaters work in a similar way to a kettle. Electricity is used to heat a heating coil, which then heats the water. These devices are usually cheaper to buy than heat pumps. However, when using this method to heat the pool water, the following should be considered:

  • Because this pool heater uses electricity, the energy consumption is higher compared to the other heating methods. This is reflected in the operating costs.
  • This is why an electric pool heater is particularly recommended for smaller pools or pools that do not need to be heated all year round – for example, in a holiday home.
  • An electric pool heater is usually easy to install. It also works independently of the weather and outside temperatures.
