If you’re interested in a metal credit card, you’re following a new trend designed to give bank customers an extra sense of luxury and value. Here, we’ll show you which banks already offer these types of credit cards.
Metal credit cards: These providers already offer them
Credit cards are typically made of plastic or are entirely virtual. However, they can also be made of metal—such as steel or titanium.
- Revolut: The London-based bank is one of the few European providers to offer a metal credit card. It is a MasterCard. The card is made of steel and weighs 18 grams.
- N26: The Berlin-based direct bank specializes in smartphone banking. But you can also get physical credit cards from N26—including a metal credit card. This is also a MasterCard, and you can choose from three different colors.
- Apple: With the Apple Card, the California-based tech giant introduced its own credit card in early 2019. It is intended for use wherever contactless payments via Apple Pay are not yet available. Apple’s credit card is made of titanium and was launched in the U.S. in August 2019. However, it remains to be seen if and when the Apple Card will be available in Germany.
What are the advantages of a metal credit card?
- There are no tangible advantages to a credit card made of metal instead of plastic. You can use the metal card to pay at card terminals just as you would with a regular plastic card.
- However, you may run into problems if a terminal only accepts contactless payments and you don’t have your mobile device with Apple Pay or Google Pay on hand. In such cases, you won’t be able to use most metal credit cards.
- With the Apple Card and some other cards, the credit card number, expiration date, and CVC number are no longer visible on the card. You can now only find this information in your Apple Wallet.
- Ultimately, the benefit of the metal card lies solely in the added sense of prestige and individuality. Unlike traditional credit cards, it certainly looks the part.
