Range of a drone: interesting facts and tips

by Johannes

The range of a drone depends on the model and other factors. You can extend the range of your drone with a few tips

Range of a drone: factors that influence it

Multiple factors influence the range of a drone. There are further differences depending on the manufacturer and model.

  • Most drones on sale have a range of between three and five kilometers. Better equipped models can reach a range of 15 kilometers, including the DJI Mavic 3 Classic, for example. However, the further a drone can fly, the more expensive it is
  • Special drones such as logistics or military drones can reach much further ranges. While logistics drones can reach several hundred kilometers, military drones can exchange information in real time over several thousand kilometers.
  • A large range of action is unfortunately not permitted in Germany, as only drones that are within the pilot’s field of vision are allowed to fly here. The visibility range of an average drone is between 50 and 200 meters, depending on the weather conditions and the size of the flying object
  • You must also pay attention to the flight altitude. Without a permit, drones may only fly at a maximum height of 120 meters. You can find more information on this in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 and 2020/746.
  • When choosing a drone, you can pay attention to how the drone behaves in the event of signal loss. Many models fly back to the pilot if the transmission signal is lost.

Improving the range of a drone: how to proceed

Improving the range of a drone requires a basic understanding of the factors that influence it.

  • A first step is to choose an optimal flying location that offers clear lines of sight and minimal electromagnetic interference. Antenna alignment is important; precise alignment significantly improves signal strength.
  • Another aspect is the choice of the correct radio frequency, as lower frequencies often provide a better range. The use of signal amplifiers and directional antennas improves communication between the remote control and the drone.
  • With the help of transmitter modules and antennas, you can achieve a range of up to ten kilometers with conventional drones.
  • Another way to improve the range of a drone is to use a WLAN repeater. This allows you to improve the range by around 20 to 25 meters
  • When extending the range of a drone, the responsibility of the drone operator is paramount. It is essential to respect the applicable laws and regulations regarding drone flights. The privacy of other people must also be respected
