Key combination for the unequal sign

by Pramith

You can use a specific key combination for the unequal sign (≠). You can enter it quickly with the corresponding code:

Enter the unequal sign in Word

To insert the unequal sign in Word, all you need is a number and a key combination. Alternatively, you can also enter it as a special character via the “Insert” – “Symbol” menu. Proceed as follows.

  • First enter the number “2260” and mark it with the mouse. Then press the “Alt” and “C” keys simultaneously. The unequal sign appears in the line:
  • In older versions of Office, in addition to pressing “Alt” and “C”, you must also hold down the minus sign “-” to display the not equal sign.
  • Alternatively, you can also enter a numeric code using the numeric keypad on the keyboard to display the not equal sign in Word. Hold down the “Alt” key and enter the number “8800”.

Type the unequal character in other programs

Other than in Word, you can also create the character in another way if your keyboard has a number pad on the right-hand side.

  • First check whether you can type numbers using the block. If this is not the case, press the “Num” button in the upper area. Then press and hold the “Alt” key at the bottom left and type the number 8800 on the number pad. The unequal sign then appears:
  • This works in many programs, but not in all. Alternatively, you can also find the character in the special character list in Office and Windows. To do this, simply press the “Windows” and “R” keys and enter the command “charmap”. You will now find the unequal sign and all other special characters below.
  • Under Mac OS, the problem is solved with a much simpler key combination. Here you hold down the “Alt” key and then tap the equal sign.

Insert the unequal sign in Excel

If you need the unequal sign in an Excel table, proceed as follows.

  • You also have the option of inserting an unequal sign in the Excel spreadsheet program. This is also done by entering a numerical code, but in a different place.
  • Open the “Insert” tab in the menu and select “Symbol” on the right-hand side of the screen. A window opens with the available symbols and special characters
  • Here, select “Normal text” for the font. In the next box, select “Mathematical operators”.
  • In the lower “Character code” box, enter the digits “2260”. Then press “Insert” and “Close”. The unequal sign appears in the selected Excel cell
