Breakout Rooms in Zoom: How to do it

by Pramith

To activate breakout rooms in Zoom, you must have host rights. In addition, the host of the room must have enabled this option.

Breakout Rooms in Zoom: step-by-step instructions

In principle, it is very easy to open Breakout Room in Zoom when you have started the meeting and thus are the host or have claimed the host.

  • Move the mouse pointer downwards in the programme window if the menu bar is not displayed. This is because it hides when not in use.
  • Click on the Breakout Sessions button.
  • In the new screen you can set the number of breakout rooms in Zoom. You can also set up whether you as host or the participants make the allocation independently or whether the programme should select.
  • Followed by this, you will see the rooms you have created in a new screen and can jump to the individual sessions.
  • You can also change the rooms, add more rooms and set time limits or give time warnings.
  • You also have the option of giving or taking away certain design freedoms from the participants.
  • When you are satisfied, click on the Open All Rooms button.

To allow breakout rooms

If you don’t see the button to open breakout rooms, it’s because of the meeting settings. However, this can also be set up quickly if you have logged in with your Zoom account.

  • Click on your Zoom profile page. This is because the settings for Breakout Rooms cannot be set from the Ap.
  • On the left side under Personal you will find the link Settings.
  • Find the settings for In Meeting (Advanced) and there the item Breakout Room – Meetings. Enable this setting and save the changes.
  • Important: Only the host of the room can make this setting.
