MSI: Bios Update – this is how it works

With the MSI Live Update you can update your MSI BIOS. The details at a glance and the instructions with the next steps.

MSI: Bios update with Live Update

The easiest way to update the Bios is with MSI Live Update. The tool was developed by MSI to make the update process safer and more reliable. This is especially suitable for you if you have never done a bios update before. Because with the MSI Live Update you are on the safe side.

  • Download MSI Live Update.
  • Install the software afterwards. Once the installation is complete, open the programme.
  • You will now see the overview of MSI Live Update. Under “Live Update”, select the option “Manual Scan”. Then press the “Scan” button further down. MSI will now check for any available updates.
  • Once the search is complete, place a tick next to the available software. Then download it using the “Download” button. The installation window will then open after the download is complete.
  • Select “Windows Mode” in the installation. This will save you having to flash the bios manually.
  • The programme will now update the MSI bios on its own. If your computer restarts during the installation, it is best to leave your device completely alone. Under no circumstances should you try to force a restart manually! In the worst case, this will severely damage the bios during the update.
  • Once the installation is complete, the update is finished and your Bios is up to date.

MSI: Flash bios update yourself

If the automatic bios update does not work, follow these instructions to flash the update onto your mainboard yourself. Even if there were problems with previous updates, this is the better option. Fortunately, thanks to Live Update, this is also quite easy to do.

  • Follow steps 1 – 4 from the instructions above. In the window, now select “In DOS Mode.” instead of “Windows Mode.”.
  • Connect a USB stick to your computer. The stick should ideally be empty and have a minimum size of 512 MB. Warning: All data on the USB stick will be deleted because the setup formats it. Therefore, make a backup of the data beforehand or use a new stick.
  • Now select the USB stick from the drop-down list. MSI Live Update will now configure the USB stick accordingly. If this has been done successfully, you can restart your PC with “Start”.
  • Boot from the USB stick. Note: In most cases you will have to change the boot order in the bios.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to manually update your bios.
