Thunderbird: Import PST file – this is how it works

by Johannes

If you would like to import a PST file from Outlook into Thunderbird, this is unfortunately not possible. However, there are various detours that allow you to make the move from Outlook to Thunderbird

Thunderbird: Replace import from PST file

PST files are created and used exclusively by Microsoft Outlook. Thunderbird and other programmes cannot and should not use them. If you still have Outlook installed, follow these instructions. If Outlook is not installed, we will help you in the next paragraph.

  • Open Thunderbird and tap the [Alt] key at the bottom left of the keyboard.
  • The menu bar now appears at the top. Under “Extras”, select the item “Import”.
  • Click on “Import from Outlook” and select here which data you would like to import from Outlook.
  • Click on the button “Start import” to transfer all desired data from Outlook to Thunderbird.

Thunderbird: Import PST file by conversion

If Outlook is no longer installed on your computer, you can convert the PST file to another format and then import it into Thunderbird.

  • To do this, download the free Outlook Viewer and install the software.
  • Import the PST file and then save it as an EML file.
  • Now download ImportExportTools NG for Thunderbird and install the add-on.
  • Restart Thunderbird and find the desired destination folder in the folder directory on the left.
  • Right-click on it and select “Import messages” under “ImportExportTools NG”.
  • If you select the EML file here, all your messages and other content will be imported.
  • Note: If you use an IMAP account, all imported mails will automatically be uploaded to the mailbox.
