What is LaMDA AI? The AI simply explained

by Pramith

The abbreviation LaMDA AI comes up again and again in the media, and this begs the question of what LaMDA actually is. LaMDA AI is not new, but the battle between Microsoft and Google for supremacy has given the topic of artificial intelligence a new dynamic.

What is LaMDA AI? Here’s what you should know about artificial intelligence

What’s behind LaMDA AI becomes a little clearer when you read the acronym spelled out: Language Model for Dialogue Applications or Language Model for Dialogue Applications. The abbreviation AI stands for artificial intelligence and thus, just like the abbreviation KI that we usually use, for artificial intelligence.

  • Scientists have been working on artificial intelligence for a long time and corresponding programmes are already being used in a wide variety of areas. You have probably already come into contact with artificial intelligence, for example when communicating with Alexa from Amazon or Cortana from Microsoft.
  • LaMDA is not a brand new project either, researchers have been working on the chatbot for several years. In recent months, however, Google has developed a flurry of activity. The reason for this is its competitor Microsoft, which has secured a large stake in the ChatGPT chatbot from the AI start-up OpenAI. ChatGPT was presented to the general public at the end of 2022, putting Google under pressure to move.
  • Google plans to unveil LaMDA to the public in March 2023. According to Google, LaMDA will have the ability to communicate in such a way that it is almost impossible for the person on the other end of the conversation to identify their virtual counterpart as a chatbot.
  • Due to the training with many billions of documents as well as dialogues, the chatbot should also be able to master the fine nuances of conversation and thus adapt perfectly to its communication partner. Because of this, communication with the chatbot should, according to Google, hardly differ from communication between two human conversation partners.
