In this article we give you an overview of the dragons from the series House of the Dragon. We have summarised the most important information for you.
House of the Dragon: The ‘old’ dragons
The dragons we introduce in this chapter have a few years under their belt, but are relevant to the course of HotD’s history.
- Balerion: He is also called the ‘black terror’. He was originally Aegon Targaryen’s mount and was part of the conquest of Westeros. His fourth and final mount is Viserys Targaryen. In the HofD series, we only see Balerion’s skull laid out in a sort of tomb under the red keep.
- Vhagar: The female dragon Vhagar is originally the mount of Visenya Targaryen and plays an important role (as does Balerion) in the conquest of Westeros. She was born on Dragonstone and came from Valyria as an egg. Her scales are thin green to greyish.
- Vermithor: Also known as the ‘bronze fury’. Vermithor was originally ridden by Jahaerys Targaryen. After his death, Vermithor sought out a cave in the Dragon Mountain of Castle Dragonstone. He is still there at the time when Demon Targaryen descends to him in Dragon Mountain. Vermithor is just over 100 years old at the time.
Dragons of Rhaenyra, Daemon and Rhaenyra’s sons
Here you will find information about the dragons of Rhaenyra and Daemon Taegaryen as well as Jaecerys, Lucerys and Gottfrid Velaryon.
- Syrax: Syrax is the mount of Rhaenyra Targaryen. It is a female dragon with golden scales.
- Caraxes: Also called ‘the bloodworm’. Caraxes belongs to Daemon Targaryen. He has a long, slender, almost serpentine body and is about half the size of Vhagar in the first season House of the Dragon. His scales are blood red.
- Vermax: This dragon belongs to Jaecerys Velaryon. The dragon was placed in the boy’s cradle as an egg when he was still an infant. Vermax has greenish-yellow scales.
- Arrax: He is the mount of Lucerys Velaryon. Arrax has pearly scales.
- Tyraxes: He belongs to Gottfrid Velaryon. He is not seen in the first season HotD, you only learn his name.
Dragon of the house of Velaryon
After Rhaenys Targaryen married Corlys Velaryon, she brought dragon riding into the Velaryon family. Here’s some info.
- Meleys: She is also called ‘the red queen’. She belongs to Rhaenys Targaryen. Meleys has bold red scales and a ring of horns around her head.
- Sea Smoke: He belongs to Laenor Velaryon. Its scales are light to dark blue.
- Moon Dancer: She belongs to Baela Targaryen. She doesn’t appear in the first season of HotD yet, you only learn her name.
Dragons of Aegon, Helaena and Aemond Targaryen
Here are some explanations of the dragons of King Visery’s children
- Sunfire: Its owner or rider is Aegon II. Targaryen. Sunfire does not yet appear in the first season House of the Dragon:
- Dreamfire: This dragon belongs to Helaena Targaryen. Dreamfire is also not yet seen in the first season HotD.
- Vhagar: He changes riders throughout the season. In the beginning, it is Laena Velaryon. Later it is Aemond Targaryen:
