Netflix: Change resolution – how to do it

by Tobias

Netflix streams all series and films in HD. If your current playback is not sharp, you should change the resolution. In this article, we tell you how to do this.

Change resolution on Netflix

To watch everything in HD on Netflix, you need a corresponding subscription for two or more devices. Then you can change the resolution indirectly via the settings. The quality of the videos is related to the allowed data consumption:

  • To do this, open the Netflix website and log in to your account.
  • Then click on your profile picture and the “Account” entry in the top right corner.
  • In the “Profiles and Parental Controls” section, select your profile and click on “Playback Settings”.
  • If you select the “Automatic” option here, Netflix will adjust the streaming quality to your internet connection. If you always want to watch in HD, select the entry “High” – if available, 4K films are displayed in UHD in this setting. With “Medium” you get a resolution of around 720p and with “Low” you stream in SD quality.
  • Finally, save your selection with “Save”.

Change resolution in the Netflix apps

If you use the streaming service on your smartphone or tablet via the Netflix app, you can also adjust the resolution. However, this only works for streaming via a mobile data connection. If you stream via Wi-Fi, Netflix automatically selects the appropriate resolution for your internet speed and device.

  • Tap the profile icon in the top right corner and select “App settings”.
  • Finally, tap on the “Mobile data consumption” entry in the “Video playback” section.
  • If you activate the entry “Automatic”, Netflix will adjust the resolution to your current internet speed. If you select “Save data”, Netflix reduces the resolution to SD quality. Use the “Maximum data consumption” entry to increase the resolution to HD or 4K – depending on the film and end device.
