Change fonts: reduce ink and toner costs

A student from the USA wanted to reduce the printing costs of his school and analysed four popular fonts. According to his calculations, this could also save the US government around 370 million dollars (full news story):

  • Garamond: According to his analysis, “Garamond” is the winner. The font is thinner than “Times New Roman”, for example, and therefore uses less ink and is easier on the wallet.
  • Centuy Gothic: A company from the Netherlands has analysed fonts before and came to the conclusion that “Century Gothic” saves about 31% toner compared to Arial.
  • Ecofont Vera Sans: The free font “Ecofont Vera Sans” was developed especially for saving ink. All you have to do is register with your email address. The company Ecofont has developed font families that supposedly save up to 50% ink: The font has holes in it like Swiss cheese, but according to scientific research, it does not affect legibility.

  • Download Garamond, Century Gothic and Ecofont
  • Open the downloaded font file with a double click and unzip it if necessary.
