Recording PC sound is an art that requires technical know-how and high-quality equipment – whether for podcasts, gaming highlights or music productions. With clear steps and the right kit, you can produce recordings that meet professional standards.

Recording PC sound: Selecting and preparing the right hardware

Before you start recording PC sound, the choice of hardware determines the quality. Microphones, audio interfaces and even the room acoustics all play a part. Tailor the components to your project rather than relying on off-the-shelf solutions.

  1. Understanding microphone types: Condenser microphones such as the Audio-Technica AT2020 capture subtle nuances and are suitable for studio recordings. Dynamic models such as the Shure SM58 block out ambient noise – ideal for live settings or noisy rooms.
  2. Using an audio interface: Professional microphones require an interface (e.g. Focusrite Scarlett) with an XLR connection. Enable phantom power (48 V) on the interface for condenser microphones.
  3. USB microphones as an alternative: Devices such as the Blue Yeti offer plug-and-play functionality, but are less flexible. Use them for quick voice recordings or podcasts.
  4. Check cable quality: Cheap cables produce hum. Use shielded cables with gold-plated connectors for a clean signal.
  5. Optimise room acoustics: Hang heavy curtains or place foam panels on reflective walls. Carpet also helps to dampen disruptive echoes.
  6. Microphone troubleshooting: If the microphone isn’t recognised, check the privacy settings in Windows (Settings > Privacy > Microphone). Ensure access is granted to apps.

Setting up, recording and editing with software

Without the right software, even the best hardware is of no use. Use tools that meet your requirements – from simple voice recorders to multi-track productions.

  1. Using the Windows Voice Recorder: The built-in tool records only from microphone inputs. Launch the app, click ‘Start Recording’ and, whilst recording, set manual markers for later editing. By default, save the file to This PC/Documents/Audio Recordings. Trim the start and end points afterwards directly within the app.
  2. Recording system audio: Use browser tools such as ScreenCapture (screenrec.com) to record system audio alongside the microphone. These solutions work without any additional software.
  3. DAWs for professionals: Programmes such as Audacity (free) or Reaper allow for multitrack recording, effects and precise editing. For music projects, use 48 kHz/24-bit for maximum dynamic range.
  4. ASIO drivers to reduce latency: Install ASIO4ALL on Windows to minimise delays between input and output. Configure the driver in your DAW’s audio menu.
  5. Enable monitoring: Connect headphones directly to the interface to hear the input in real time. Avoid using speakers to prevent feedback.
  6. Backing up raw files: Save uncompressed WAV files as a backup. For uploads, convert to MP3 (at least 192 kbps), but always keep the originals.
  7. Filtering plosive sounds: Place a pop filter in front of the microphone to soften harsh ‘P’ or ‘B’ sounds. Alternatively, positioning the microphone at a slight angle can help.
