Nutella expired: When you can still eat it

If you discover that your Nutella has expired, you are probably wondering whether you can still safely eat the delicious spread. You’ll find the answers in this article.

Nutella has expired: When you can still eat the spread

You can recognize expired Nutella by its taste. The shelf life of the spread depends on how you store it – refrigerated or unrefrigerated.

  • The best-before date printed on every food product helps the customer to keep an eye on the shelf life of the food. However, this date is also a legal safeguard for the seller and manufacturer.
  • If the Nutella jar is still unopened but well past the best-before date, you can usually still enjoy the cream without worrying. It makes no difference whether you have stored the nut nougat cream refrigerated or unrefrigerated.
  • The situation is different if you have already opened the Nutella jar. Stored unrefrigerated and already opened, the chocolate cream can then be enjoyed for two to three weeks. Nutella can be kept refrigerated for several months.
  • Inedible Nutella cream can be recognized by the fact that it is rancid and no longer tastes good at all.
There will always be a change in taste and possibly also mold or fat deposits.

  • Tips for correct storage: To ensure that you can enjoy Nutella for a long time, store the jar in a cool, dry and dark place to preserve its quality.

Minimum shelf life versus actual consumption time

An expired best-before date is therefore no reason to throw it away immediately, while the use-by date must be strictly adhered to.

  • The best-before date (BBD) indicates the minimum date until which an unopened food product retains its specific properties such as taste, smell, color and nutritional value when stored correctly.
  • It is not an expiry date, but a quality date that represents the manufacturer’s guarantee for the product properties up to this date.
Food is often still edible after the best-before date, but consumers should check for themselves whether the smell, appearance or consistency are atypical.

  • The use-by date on the other hand, is given for perishable foods that pose a health risk after expiry, such as raw minced meat or poultry.
  • Food with an expired use-by date should no longer be consumed, as it may be harmful to health, and may no longer be sold. The use-by date therefore indicates the last day on which the food can be safely consumed.

Comparison with other nut nougat creams

Compared to other nut nougat creams, Nutella can be distinguished as follows in terms of shelf life and storage:

    • Storage: Nutella should ideally be stored at room temperature (between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius) in a dry, light-protected place, just like many other nut nougat creams. However, refrigeration makes the spread firm and difficult to spread, but extends its shelf life by several months after opening. It is also better not to refrigerate other nut nougat creams, as the vegetable fat will harden and the cream will lose its spreadability.
    • Shelf life: Closed jars of Nutella and similar nut nougat creams can be kept for several months thanks to their high sugar and fat content. Once opened, it is recommended that Nutella is consumed within around 3 weeks at room temperature, unless it is kept in the fridge, which significantly extends its shelf life. Other brands also recommend storing opened jars at room temperature for no longer than three months, as the nuts they contain can become rancid over time.
    • Oil separation: With all creams, oil can settle on the surface if stored too warm, which is harmless and should simply be stirred in.
