If you use a red light lamp to treat your symptoms, it is important to protect your eyes so that they do not dry out or suffer long-term damage.
The damage a red light lamp can cause to the eyes
The effect of a red light lamp has been scientifically proven. The light can accelerate the healing or alleviation of symptoms of a wide range of illnesses, including lumbago, knee pain and even the treatment of styes. However, your eyes must be adequately protected during use.
- Powerful red light lamps are quite capable of burning your skin. This can even result in long-term skin damage. Your eyes in particular can be affected by the infrared treatment;
- The short-wave parts of the infrared light (also known as IR-A radiation) penetrate through the front of the eye;
- This can lead to sustainable damage to the retina, cornea or lens – especially if the lamp is used at high power or if treatments are carried out at very short intervals. However, not every red light lamp automatically causes damage, it depends on the type of lamp and the intensity.
- In addition, it can happen that the lenses become cloudy due to permanent infrared exposure . The consequence of this is the development of cataracts, which means that your vision is permanently impaired.
- The heating from the red light lamp can also cause drying out or irritation of the eyes – this can be painful and damage the surface of the eye.
How to protect your eyes properly during red light treatment
If you use the light from the red light lamp on your face, it is essential that you protect your eyes adequately.
- If you keep the specified safety distance from the lamp, it is normally sufficient to keep your eyes closed during use. The safety distance is between 30 and 50 centimeters, depending on the device.
- Cover your eyes with a damp cloth to protect them from the heat.
- Never look directly into the lamp, even for a brief moment;
- Stick to the application time: Ten to fifteen minutes per session is usually sufficient.
- Eyes that are already damaged or those of children are particularly sensitive to infrared light. In this case, the use of protective goggles is advisable;
- People with existing eye conditions should always exercise caution and only use the device after consulting a doctor.
- You should not use red light therapy in the case of acute inflammation, fever or blood clots.
Red light helps against these complaints
Red light can do more than just warm you up – it has a targeted effect on deeper tissue and thus supports the healing of various ailments.
- If you are suffering from muscle tension, joint pain or the onset of a cold, the targeted heat radiation can provide you with noticeable relief.
- The infrared radiation penetrates deep into the skin, stimulates blood circulation and thus promotes the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tissue. At the same time, the metabolism is stimulated and inflammatory processes can subside more quickly.
- Red light is particularly effective for muscle tension in the neck and back area, rheumatic complaints and pain in the knee or shoulder. The heat can also help to relieve mucous membranes and alleviate symptoms of sinusitis or the onset of a cold.
- Some even use red light to help with skin blemishes or acne as the improved blood circulation can also have a cleansing effect here.
