FlixTrain is a German rail transport company that offers long-distance trains and has been operating in long-distance passenger transport since 2018. It is part of the Flix Group, which also operates FlixBus, Europe’s largest long-distance bus network.
- FlixTrain launched as a kind of “budget rail” service with a basic product that customers can upgrade by adding extras. The trains primarily run on routes between major cities in Germany, with some connections to Basel or Sweden; however, FlixTrain does not own its own trains but partners with other rail operators.
- The business model is based on the “no-frills” principle: there is only one class of service, no dining car, and seats are assigned on a guaranteed basis. For an additional fee, comfort seats with more legroom and the reservation of an empty adjacent seat are available. Prices are demand-based.
- FlixTrain aims to complement FlixMobility’s long-distance bus network and thus make mobility more sustainable. Operations began with routes from insolvent providers such as Locomore and Hamburg-Köln-Express, and today FlixTrain operates various routes between metropolitan areas. The trains travel at speeds comparable to Deutsche Bahn’s ICs, and on some routes even at ICE speeds.
