If the battery on your smartphone, tablet, or other electronic device drains while charging, it could be due to a variety of issues, both minor and major. We’ll show you how to fix it.
First Steps: Battery Drains While Charging
- First, completely turn off the device in question and then turn it back on. This will help you rule out a temporary software issue.
- Unplug the charging cable from the device and take a look inside the charging port. You can carefully remove dust from the port using a bent paperclip. Especially with iPhones, lint tends to accumulate here, which can prevent the charging cable from making proper contact.
- Also try charging the device in a different location. If the phone or tablet charges when plugged into a different outlet or USB port, the power supply issue lies there.
- Try using a different USB cable and, if possible, a different power adapter as well. Faulty hardware is the most common cause of charging problems.
- If you can open your smartphone and remove the battery, briefly removing it may also help. However, be sure to turn off the device first and wait a few minutes before reinserting the battery.
Battery Drains While Charging—What Should You Do?
- If you still haven’t resolved the issue, it’s highly likely that the battery is damaged. The battery will still charge, but only so weakly that the power is being consumed faster than it’s being stored.
- If the device is still under warranty, contact the retailer where you purchased the product or contact the manufacturer directly. If the warranty has expired, you can replace the battery yourself on many devices, or alternatively, have it repaired at a cell phone repair shop. A battery replacement usually costs 30 to 60 euros.
