WhatsApp: Activate encryption – this is how it works

by Mike

You can activate secure end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp. This protects all messages and WhatsApp calls. There is also a two-factor verification. We explain how to set them up encryption.

Make WhatsApp secure: How to enable encryption

Encryption on WhatsApp applies to chats, group chats, WhatsApp calls, pictures and videos, voice messages and file attachments.

  • Encryption only works if both chat partners are using the latest WhatsApp version. Therefore, check whether an update is available for WhatsApp. If you do not see an update, you can download WhatsApp as an APK from us.
  • You then need to close WhatsApp completely (Android), here are our instructions for iPhone.
  • Then open WhatsApp again and tap the menu button ☻ “Settings”.
  • You will now see a lock icon confirming end-to-end encryption.

Set up WhatsApp encryption

To check if your chat is secure, do the following:

  • Open the (group) chat and tap on the name at the top.
  •  You will then see the menu item “Encryption”.
  • If you tap on the menu item, you will see the reason for the missing encryption. It is usually because your chat partner has not yet updated WhatsApp.
  • If, on the other hand, the lock is closed, you will be shown a security number with a QR code by tapping on “Encryption”. This number is identical to the number of your chat partner. A comparison of the numbers confirms the end-to-end encryption.

WhatsApp with two-factor authentication

If you want to switch on two-factor authentication, this is also done quickly.

  • Open the “Settings” in the WhatsApp menu and then tap on “Account”.
  • Select the item “Verification in two steps” and tap “Activate”.
  • Set a six-digit PIN. For security reasons, you must enter this PIN if you ever reinstall WhatsApp.
  • In case you forget the PIN, you can now enter an e-mail address. Tap on “Next” and you will receive a confirmation.
