Prepare spells in Baldur’s Gate 3: Important information

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Druid, Paladin, Mage and Cleric classes must prepare spells in order to use them. Unprepared spells cannot be used, even if you have learned them.

  • This is always possible outside of battle. This allows you to adjust your strategy accordingly to optimize the build of your magic characters like in Dungeons & Dragons.
  • Spell preparation is possible via the spell book of the corresponding characters. On the PC, open the spell book with [K] while accessing it on the console or with a controller via the radial menu. To do this, press the right analog stick.
  • In the spell book you will find a list of all the spells available to you. You will find the currently prepared spells at the top of the list entitled Prepared spells. It also shows you how many spells you can prepare
  • Drag the desired spells into the list to prepare them. You can also remove spells from the list, but you will not be able to use them until the next adjustment. You then only need to confirm your selection
  • Note: The other classes such as warlocks or bards do not use prepared spells. For these classes, you can only customize the spells during the level up process.
