Midjourney: Copyright – what you need to know

by Johannes

You need to know whether images created with Midjourney are subject to copyright if you use the tool regularly

Midjourney: What you need to know about copyright

Midjourney allows you to create images using an AI function. This raises the question of copyright. Because you don’t create the images yourself, the tool creates them for you.

  • Midjourney images are currently not subject to copyright. However, this regulation may change in the future
  • As these are autonomous products created with the help of an AI tool, they do not have an author. Accordingly, they are not intellectual creations in the true sense of the word.
  • For an image to be protected by copyright, it must legally be created by a human hand and be the product of intellectual creation. This is not the case with the images created with Midjourney.
  • However, please note: Images that you have created with Midjourney may only be used with restrictions. Even if you have created them, they do not belong to you. You may use them commercially, but you must always pay attention to the exact current regulations
