Minecraft: Craft and use turtle shells

A turtle shell is very popular in Minecraft. If you want to craft it yourself, you’ll need some patience and turtles

The Minecraft turtle shell is not difficult to make and extremely useful

The turtle shell in Minecraft is a piece of headgear that not only looks stylish, but also allows the player to hold their breath for longer underwater. The individual components can be obtained in the following ways:

• The turtle shell is made from horn shields that young turtles drop as they grow. At least two sea turtles are needed for mating to produce hatchlings. These animals can be found on sandy beaches in groups of up to five.

• The first mating should take place directly on site, as the turtles return to their birthplace, i.e. their spawning site, to lay their eggs. If you take a tortoise to your home, for example with a leash, they will not lay eggs there.

• Sea turtles are put in the mood for mating by seagrass. Seagrass is found in the ocean, in river biomes, but not in small shallow waters. You can create it yourself by right-clicking on a block of earth or sand under water with bone meal. The seaweed must be harvested with scissors

• With the seaweed in your hand, right-click on two turtles until hearts appear. The female of the two sea turtles then starts digging in the sand. A little later, she lays several turtle eggs

• Important: The turtle eggs must be protected from zombies! They are after the eggs and will try to crush them. The player should not walk over the turtle eggs either. The best thing to do is to build a fence around the hatchery

• Have a little patience. It can take several day and night cycles for the turtle eggs to hatch. To speed up the process, it is advisable to bring the parents back to mate. Sea turtles and other animals are ready to mate every five minutes in Minecraft

• The growth of hatchling turtles can be accelerated with the help of more seaweed. The hatchlings must also be protected from zombies and piglins. They seek out the nearby water as soon as they see the light of day.

How to make a turtle shell from horn shields

You need five horn shields for a turtle shell. These must be arranged correctly in the workbench inventory to create the coveted headgear.

• Once the hatchlings are fully grown, you will receive horn shields to make a turtle shell. The five horn shields are arranged in a workbench like an upside-down U.

• The finished turtle shell is placed in place of the helmet. To do this, press E to call up the character’s armor inventory. Now drag the turtle shell onto the area for the headgear at the top left

• Pro tip: To be able to hold your breath even longer underwater, we recommend a helmet with the enchantment Breathing-I, Breathing-II or even better Breathing-III.
