Built-in Air Conditioner Is Making Noise: Causes
The following causes are making your air conditioner noisy:
- A clogged filter is the most common cause of noise. Remove the filter and clean it thoroughly to resolve the issue.
- Icing can cause noise when it comes into contact with the fan inside the unit. Unplug the air conditioner and let it defrost for a few hours.
- If duct issues are causing your air conditioner to be noisy, you’ll need to contact a professional. If the ducts are too close together or there are problems with the refrigerant in the lines, professional help is required.
- Less commonly, noises caused by the hoses inside the unit may be audible. These are caused by contraction and expansion due to temperature differences. In this case, you don’t need to take any action, as this is a normal phenomenon.

- The most common reason for sudden noises is an uneven floor. If the air conditioner is tilted, the refrigerant won’t circulate properly and condensation won’t drain effectively. Make sure the unit is level.
- As with built-in models, a dirty filter can cause noise. Clean it thoroughly.
- If the air conditioner is whistling, either the exhaust hose or the air intakes are covered or clogged. Check them and make sure the air can circulate freely.
