If you want to dye a rug and breathe new life into it, it doesn’t take much effort. We’ll show you how to refresh your old rugs in just a few simple steps.
Dyeing Rugs: Materials and Supplies
You only need a few materials to dye rugs. Smaller, solid-colored rugs in particular will shine like new with this method.
- Fabric dye: With one packet of fabric dye, you can dye between 300g and 700g of carpet fabric. So you’ll need to weigh your carpet beforehand to determine the amount of dye required. For a more intense result, you should use either more dye or a darker shade.
- The dyeing process takes place in the washing machine .
- To prevent your hands from getting stained, you’ll need disposable gloves.
- Caution! Be sure to check the carpet’s material before dyeing, as synthetic fibers like polyester or acrylic cannot be dyed. Only carpets made of cotton, wool, silk, and hair yarn can be dyed at home to a new color.
- Blended fibers can also be dyed, but they must contain at least 60 percent natural fibers.
- You must also check whether your rug can withstand a washing temperature of at least 40°C. This temperature is required for dyeing.
How to Dye Successfully
Don’t be surprised if the result coming out of the machine is lighter than expected. The materials in the rug can vary greatly in thickness and texture, which significantly affects the dyeing result.
- Clean the rug thoroughly and hang it up to dry. This step is important because otherwise the fibers won’t be able to absorb enough dye.
- Now place the rug in the washing machine and add the appropriate number of dye packets to the drum. Of course, you’ll need to open them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Close the door and select a gentle wash cycle set to 40°C. Turn off the spin cycle.
- After the wash cycle, rinse the rug once more with clean water and then hang it on the clothesline. It’s best to wear gloves while doing this.
- Let the rug dry before returning it to its original place.
