ChatGPT: What chatbots with artificial intelligence can do

by Corinna

The ChatGPT was developed OpenAI and is currently available for everyone to use. In addition to explanatory texts, poems and homework, the new model can now also communicate with you. In doing so, it acts like a human conversation partner, as long as the questions you ask it don’t become too abstract.

ChatGPT: What’s behind it

ChatGPT is an adaptation of GPT-3.5. It is produced by the company OpenAI, which is involved in the research and development of artificial intelligence and, among other things, also developed the image generator DALL-E.

  • The predecessor model GPT-3 has been available since spring 2020 and already had a lot going for it. For example, the AI was already able to translate books, write executable codes and even summarise legal works in a way that ordinary people could understand.
  • ChatGPT is the successor to the language model and has been given a more user-friendly approach. However, it has a special new feature, the dialogue format. You can communicate with the AI via text input as if it were a real human being.
  • The ChatGPT is currently considered to be an interim version until next year, when the GPT-4 is due to be released. You can already use the chatbot now.

Training and Performance

ChatGPT was optimised through evaluations. Thus, his answers were evaluated as well as improved by trainers, which taught him to express himself in a way that was correct and as human as possible.

  • Of course, the language model is based on billions of records from various sources, such as websites or books.
  • However, it also learns that some words often occur together. This in turn creates a problem for the chatbot to respond to slightly more abstract questions.
  • For example, it answers the question about the fastest marine mammal with the peregrine falcon. But it is not only such minimally abstract questions that overwhelm him; primary school puzzles and maths problems are not yet his cup of tea.
