Elster: Apply for a certificate – this is how it works

Elster: Finding the right certificate

There are different certificates to use Elster:

  • ElsterBasic: The basic variant is free of charge. The certificate with a high security level is saved as a file on the computer. The free version is completely sufficient for private users.
  • ElsterSpezial: The ElsterSpezial certificate is stored on a special USB security stick. The price for this very high security level is currently just under 50 euros. The advantage of the stick is that the certificate is automatically renewed.
  • ElsterPlus: With ElsterPlus, the certificate is on a signature card. This is particularly secure, but also costs up to 150 euros. The signature card is recommended for larger companies, as it offers extended functions in addition to the high security level.

Elster: Log in and apply for a certificate – here’s how

You must first register at www.elster.de. Have your identification number or organization tax number ready for this.

  • Create user account: First, create a user account at www.elster.de. To do this, click on the appropriate area at the top of the Elster home page.
  • Login Option: For most taxpayers, the Certificate File login option is quite sufficient. Select this as your “personal certificate. “
  • Register: Continue by entering your personal information, which includes entering your tax number or tax ID, as well as the responsible tax office. You can find the tax number on the top left of your income tax statement. If you have never filed a tax return before and do not have a tax number, you can file your tax return without entering this information.
  • Get letter and mail: Once you have filed your data, you will receive a mail with the activation ID and after a few days you will also receive an activation code by mail. With the ID and the code, you can then create the certificate online. Keep this information in a safe place. If the ID is lost, you will need to reapply for the certificate.
  • Download the certificate file: If you have the code and ID, enter the data to get your certificate file. Save it on your computer. You can then use it to log in to “My Elster”. Here you now have the option of selecting your own password. Together with the certificate file, which is valid for three years, the authentication works.
  • Tip: Be sure to write down the new password. If you forget it, the certificate will no longer be usable. You will have to register again.
  • Note: If you register with the new ID card, you do not need to send the code by post. With this option, your certificate can be created online in just a few minutes. You will receive a message in your mailbox around three months before the certificate expires. The certificate file can then be renewed with a single click.
