Finsta: This is the meaning behind the term

by Mike

For many young people,

Finsta is a kind of rebellion against the illusory world of the media, in which completely unrealistic ideas of beauty and lifestyle are formed. But what is behind it?

Finsta: An abbreviation with protest thoughts

The Finsta trend is directed against the posed world of social networks – especially Instagram. So the term Finsta was born out of a protest thought.

  • Finsta is a compound word made up of the words “fake” and “Instagram”. It refers to fake Instagram accounts, i.e. second or secondary accounts in addition to the main account, which young people create of themselves.
  • Some young people are said to have started the idea after they got tired of seeing posed and filtered photos on Instagram.
  • What may often be closer to reality than the usual photos on Instagram, however, can only be seen on privately posted accounts. In most cases, Finsta usernames are often fake (i.e. not real), after all, usually, only closest friends are supposed to find and follow the account.
  • The trend is said to go back to the Australian influencer Essena O’Neill. She had already voiced criticism of the make-believe world on Instagram in 2015 and subsequently deleted her profile.
  • The Finsta trend has nothing to do with otherwise fake accounts that some people create to spread their false truths or engage in online bullying.
