Google Maps: Switch between street and satellite view

by Michaela

In Google Maps, you can switch to a satellite view in addition to the normal street map. We show where you can find the option on desktop and smartphone

Change the view of Google Maps in the browser

If you use Google Maps in the browser, it’s very easy to change the view.

  • Just click on the square “Layers” box that appears at the bottom left of the map.
  • You can return to the normal view in exactly the same way: simply click on the field again, which now bears the inscription “Map”.

Show satellite view on smartphone

On the smartphone, the changeover works a little differently.

  • In the Google Maps app, you’ll see a round button in the top right, below the search bar and the “Restaurants”, “Parking”, “Groceries” etc. buttons, showing a diamond and a downward arrow.
  • Now you can choose between map types and map details. Tap on “Satellite” and the view will change.
  • To return to the street map, simply press the “Satellite” field a second time, or “Standard”.
