CVV stands for Card Verification Value. It is a three-digit number found on the back of most credit and debit cards. American Express cards are an exception. Here, the card verification number is found on the front and consists of four digits.

• The CVV was introduced to increase protection against fraud. This is especially true for transactions where the physical card is not presented, such as online shopping.

• When you shop or pay for services online, you will usually be asked to enter your card number, expiration date, and CVV. Entering the CVV ensures that you actually own the card, not just know the card number and expiration date.
