Why can’t an AI draw hands
For artists, drawing hands is the biggest challenge. Why should it be any different for an artificial intelligence (AI)?
- The reason is the complexity of the anatomy of hands and feet. In each position there are different wrinkles on the knuckles and the shading also varies. Therefore, there is no standard set of shapes and lines for the geometry of a hand.
- In addition, there is also the great variety of hands and fingers. Geometrically, hands are even more individual than a face because they contain 30 geometric differences, making it difficult for an AI to find an average rule.
- The AI has to compare many hands anew each time and generates an image from this, which is composed of the features of the compared limbs. This is why the image may contain 6 fingers and generally looks unrealistic, since the hands were also compared in the most varied positions.

But there are also crazy theories.
- For example, that by not mapping hands correctly, the AI wants to take away people’s fear that it doesn’t want to take over the world. That is, it is only pretending that it cannot draw hands.
- Another theory is that there are not that many pictures of hands on the internet. This assumption is supported by drawing lessons for beginners, where people’s hands are mostly in their pockets because they are difficult to draw.
- Human perception is said to be responsible for sensitivity in this subject, for it is with hands that we seem to notice misrepresentations. Faces, on the other hand, may contain errors that escape our eye.
