There are many different types of shopping carts in Germany, but you have the best chance of success in this country with a key if you don’t have a suitable coin and don’t have a chip with you.

• Take a key with a round head from the key ring and insert it into the shopping cart. Of course, this does not work with shopping carts where the coin or chip is pushed into the hole from the front.

• Once the trolley has come loose, you can remove the key again. Alternatively, you can simply insert the long side of the key. In this case, however, you will have to try a little until the trolley comes loose

Opening the coin flap without money – how it works

Older shopping carts in particular often have an entire coin compartment instead of a simple coin slot. Money or a corresponding chip is usually inserted here and the compartment is closed to unlock it.

• In this case, you can only proceed with a wire or a hairpin. Insert this into the top corner. You will have to try a little here too. The point you are looking for is marked with a green dot in the picture

• In an emergency, you can try to reach the point with a key. However, this is even more difficult than using wire or a hairpin. Quite narrow and long keys are suitable for this purpose
