Microsoft Edge crashes – this could be the cause

by Corinna

If you have the problem that Microsoft Edge crashes, this can be caused by various sources of error. Often you can prevent the crash by taking simple steps.

First Aid: Edge crashes

  • If your browser crashes or you do not receive any feedback from the programme, you should first close the browser. If this does not happen easily, you can force the browser to close via the task manager.
  • Do you have a lot of programmes or some very power-hungry programmes open at the same time? Close some of them before you run Edge – your memory may have been overloaded.
  • As with all programmes, Edge can also run into errors. If your browser has crashed for the first time, simply restart it. Most of the time it will then run as usual.
  • If this is not the case, restart your PC. This will fix errors in the cache.
  • If a Windows update is available, run it. The patch may contain the data that solves your problem.

Repair Microsoft Browser

While you can’t uninstall Edge and then reinstall it to fix what’s wrong, you can reset and repair the browser. Keep in mind that resetting also deletes settings and data such as saved passwords, your browser history and favourites.

  • Click on the Windows Start menu and open the settings via the cogwheel icon.
  • Then select the “Apps” menu.
  • Now search for Microsoft Edge in the “Apps & Features” list and click on the entry.
  • Click on “Advanced Options” directly under the title.
  • You can now first use the “Repair” button to check the browser without losing any personal settings.
  • If the repair help finds no error, use the “Reset” button to reset the browser to the factory settings.
