If your Windows PC doesn’t recognize your computer’s DVD drive, the problem could be with either the drive itself or Windows 10. With our tips, you can make the drive visible and usable again.
Windows PC: DVD drive not recognized
Follow these steps:
- Press the [Windows] + [R] keys simultaneously to open the “Run” dialog box.
- Enter “devmgmt.msc” here and confirm with “OK”. Device Manager will then launch.
- Click the “Action” category at the top and select the “Scan for hardware changes” option.
- Under the “View” menu item, the “Show hidden devices” option must also be enabled.
- Now open the “DVD/CD-ROM drives” category and select the correct DVD drive.
- Right-click it and select the option “Update Driver Software”. If the driver update in Device Manager is unsuccessful, you can also start the search for updated drivers directly via Windows Update . To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select “Check for updates”. This may help if Microsoft has already released updated drivers.
- If the update is unsuccessful, you can alternatively use the “Uninstall” option and then “Install”.
Make the DVD drive visible in Windows
Before attempting any manual steps, first try the Windows built-in troubleshooter. To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot and select “Hardware and Devices”. This option can often automatically detect and fix problems with connected devices. If this doesn’t work, proceed as follows::
- Perform a hardware check. To do this, restart your computer and then open the BIOS. On many devices, you can access the BIOS using the F2 key (on Dell) or the DEL/ESC/F1–F12 keys (on other manufacturers).
- Also check in the BIOS to see if the hard drive and DVD drive are recognized correctly. Look specifically for an entry such as “USB Controller” or something similar.
- If the drive does not appear in the BIOS, check the physical cable connections (SATA/IDE). Make sure the cables are securely and correctly connected to both the drive and the motherboard. If you’re unsure, consult a professional.
- If the drive still does not appear, avoid making manual changes to the registry, as these can be risky. Instead, use specialized tools such as “DVD Drive Repair” or driver software like Driver Turbo to repair the drive and install the correct drivers.
