Only three films in Oscar history have managed to win a whopping eleven Oscars: Ben Hur (1959), Titanic (1998) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004).

  • Ben Hur is set in the early 1st century. The fictional story, based on the novel of the same name by Lew Wallace, is about a Jewish prince. The reunion with an old friend confronts the two men with various conflicts of religious, political and moral nature. The film is one of the most expensive films of all time. Among others, Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography went to the 1960 film.
  • The film Titanic tells the story of the maiden voyage and tragic sinking of the historic Titanic as a drama with love story between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet by James Cameron. Out of 14 nominations, the film won eleven Oscars, including Best Picture.
  • In the third and final part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, part of the companions finally find their way to Mount Doom, where they are to destroy the ring. The fantasy film also won Oscars. The entire film series won 17 Oscars, including Best Picture several times.

As one of the most famous film awards, the Oscar honours films in over 30 categories. Fan favourites aren’t always the ones with the most awards.

  • The Revenant (2015): After a brutal bear attack, a man played by Leonardo DiCaprio fights his way through the unforgiving wilderness to exact revenge on his traitors. DiCaprio won the coveted Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance.
  • Dune (2021): In a distant future universe, nobles control a scarce resource called Spice, while a young hero, Timothée Chalamet, is chosen to lead a revolution. Dennis Villeneuve’s film won six Oscars, including Best Picture.
  • Forrest Gump (1994): A simple man with an extraordinary life goes through some of America’s most important historical events and learns many lessons about friendship, love and life itself. The film took home six Oscars.
  • The Godfather (1971): Mafia boss Don Vito Corleone struggles to preserve his family and empire amid betrayal, intrigue and violence. Of the eleven nominations, the film won three.
  • Star Wars: Star Wars (1977): In a galaxy far, far away, a young farm boy, a princess and a smuggler battle the tyrannical Empire and its feared Lord Vader. The six Oscars won by the film include Best Director, Best Visual Effects and Best Picture.
  • Slumdog Millionaire (2007): A young orphan boy from the slums of Mumbai struggles through tough living conditions and ends up winning a television show while trying to find the love of his life. The film surprisingly took home a whopping eight Oscars.
  • Im Westen Nichts Neues (2022): A group of young soldiers fight on the front lines in World War I, learning the cruelties of war as they struggle to survive. The German film picked up four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film.
