Find and edit the Autostart folder: This is how it works under Win 10

by Pramith

In the Autostart folder under Windows 10, you will find programmes that are automatically loaded when the operating system is started and are immediately available. There is also an overview of the start-up programmes in the task manager.

How to find the Autostart folder

The Autostart folder is relatively well hidden in the user account of the Windows 10 user. Each user has their own folder so that different programmes can also be loaded per profile.

  • In older Windows versions, the folder could be found in the Start menu. In Windows 10, press theWindows key together with R to open the window for executing commands.
  • A new window opens in which you enter the command shell:startup.
  • An explorer window opens with the folder C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, where “user” is the respective user.
  • If you do not want a programme to start automatically, you can remove the shortcut from the Autostart folder.
  • Versely, you can of course place a shortcut to a programme in the Autostart folder so that this programme is also loaded when the system is started.

Find Autostart Apps

In addition to the Autostart folder, Windows 10 also has the apps that start automatically and thus decide how fast your system boots up.

  • The key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc takes you to the Task Manager.
  • The fourth tab contains apps that are in the autostart. You will also see effects on the start-up.
  • You can deactivate an app as an autostart by right-clicking on it. However, you should only deactivate programmes here if you are sure that this will not have any negative effects on your computer.
  • You should always keep virus scanners or regular updates and start them at start-up so that your system remains secure.
