Jailbreaking a PS3 allows you to unlock the console for advanced features. Learn more about the requirements, risks, and step-by-step instructions for successfully jailbreaking your PS3.
Jailbreak PS3: What is behind it?
Jailbreaking your PS3 can open up the console to many advanced features. But what does it involve and what requirements must be met?
- A jailbreak allows you to install unauthorized software and applications on the PS3 and use homebrew programs and system modifications. This allows users to customize and expand the console.
- It is important to note that a jailbreak voids the PS3’s warranty and may have legal consequences if copyrighted content is used. Therefore, each step should be carefully considered.
- Not every PS3 version can be successfully jailbroken. Only certain firmware versions (usually below version 3.56 for custom firmware) and compatible models are required to perform the process.
- A jailbreak can also prevent the PS3 from accessing the PlayStation Network. This may restrict the use of certain online features.
- Disclaimer: Jailbreaking a PlayStation 3 is not generally prohibited in Germany. Installing your own software or modifications on your own console is permitted as long as no copyrighted content is used or copied without permission. The use of pirated copies is illegal and may result in criminal and civil penalties. Jailbreaking usually voids the manufacturer’s warranty. Its use may also violate Sony’s terms of use and result in exclusion from the PlayStation Network. This article is for informational purposes only and does not recommend any illegal use or violation of Sony’s terms of use.
Requirements for a successful PS3 jailbreak
Certain requirements must be met in order to perform a jailbreak on the PS3. What are these requirements and how can you ensure that your console is ready for it?
- Check the current firmware version of your PS3. A jailbreak is only possible with certain firmware versions; custom firmware in particular only works on older models with firmware 3.56 or lower, while PS3HEN is the only option available for newer models.
- It is essential to back up all data on the PS3. A jailbreak can lead to data loss, so important information should be backed up.
- Make sure you have the necessary tools and software to perform the jailbreak. This may include special programs (such as hybrid firmware or flash tools) and, in some cases, specific hardware.
- A stable internet connection is helpful for accessing instructions and support during the jailbreak process.
Step-by-step guide to PS3 jailbreak
Jailbreaking a PS3 is a complex process that requires careful steps.
- Check the model and firmware: Open the “Settings > System Settings > System Information” menu on your PS3. Check the model number and the installed firmware. Custom firmware (CFW) is only possible on older models (mostly “FAT” and some “SLIM”) with a maximum firmware version of 3.56. For all other models (newer “SLIM” and “Super Slim”), use PS3HEN.
- Back up all data: Back up your personal data via “System Settings > Data Backup” on a USB stick or external hard drive to avoid data loss.
- Prepare firmware and tools: Download the firmware that is suitable for your model. For CFW, download “Evilnat CFW” (e.g., 4.92). For HEN, download “Hybrid Firmware (HFW)” with the same version number as your OFW. Save the update file as “PS3UPDAT.PUP” in “PS3/UPDATE” (uppercase letters) on a USB stick formatted in FAT32.
- Apply the exploit toolset: For CFW, open the website “ps3toolset.com/bgtoolset” in the PS3 browser and carefully follow the instructions to patch the system memory. For HEN, go to “ps3addict.github.io/hen” or “ps3xploit.com” in the PS3 browser and follow the installation instructions to activate PS3HEN.
- Perform a system update: Shut down the PS3 and start it in recovery mode (hold down the power button). Select “System Update > Update via Disc” to install the jailbreak firmware from the USB stick.
- Activate and check jailbreak functions: After restarting, you will find new options such as “Install Package Files” or the HEN icon in the XMB menu. Now install Homebrew apps (e.g., Multiman, WebMan) as needed to use additional functions.
- Security information and future updates: Remember: With PS3HEN, you must reactivate HEN after each restart unless it is permanently installed. From now on, do not install any official Sony system updates, only those from verified jailbreak sources.
