If you want to use a 144 Hz gaming monitor via HDMI, it is certainly possible. However, there are a few limitations. In this practical tip, we’ll show you what you need to bear in mind.
HDMI: 144 Hz is possible
Standard HDMI 1.0 cables only support 60 Hz. Since HDMI version 1.4, up to 120 Hz has been possible. In theory, HDMI 2.0 can even support up to 240 Hz.
- In practice, however, the limit remains at 120 Hz. Only a few manufacturers modify some of their monitors so that 144 Hz can also be achieved via HDMI.
- As a general rule, you should purchase an HDMI 2.0 cable, as with HDMI 1.4, depending on the monitor and graphics card, refresh rates below 120 Hz may be possible at high resolutions.
- Always ensure that your graphics card supports the relevant HDMI version. The monitor should also be capable of supporting the relevant version. However, as every HDMI cable is backwards compatible, opting for a higher standard won’t do any harm.
144 Hz monitor: Full performance usually not possible with HDMI
- If you want to achieve not just 120 Hz but the full 144 Hz, this unfortunately isn’t possible with current HDMI versions. For this, you’ll need to use a Dual Link DVI-D or DisplayPort cable.
- If the monitor supports G-Sync, you must use a DisplayPort cable to take advantage of the additional features and benefits.
