Whether you want to remove paint from tiles or stone, you can do it easily with the right tools and techniques. Read our home article to find out how it works and what you need to keep in mind.
Removing paint from stone – here’s how to do it
Before you start cleaning, you need to determine exactly what type of stone you’re dealing with. Some types of stone have specific properties that you should also take into account.
- Paint stripper: If the paint is a type of varnish, a paint stripper can help. This is a chemical solution that removes the paint. Apply the paint stripper with a brush and let it sit according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Note: The paint stripper can discolor the tiles, so you should test it on an inconspicuous area first. If you use the product indoors, be sure to open the windows.
- Steam cleaner: A steam cleaner is particularly effective for paint stains on tiles. The hot steam loosens the paint, and the brushes scrub it away. To make removal easier, you can also add a little vinegar to the water tank. Tip: Soak paint stains beforehand with acetic acid and baking soda. The two agents react and make it easier for you to remove the paint. With stones that have rough surfaces, the work is a bit more labor-intensive, but a steam cleaner is suitable for this as well.
- Pressure washer: For large outdoor surfaces, it’s best to use a pressure washer; this will also help loosen the paint residue. If the pressure washer alone isn’t effective, you’ll need to slightly loosen the paint first. You can use a diluent for this—but you must wipe it up or remove it before cleaning the stones with the pressure washer. Tip: Use a broom with stiff bristles to brush off the paint stains.
- Putty knife: You can only remove very stubborn paint residue with a sharp putty knife. However, this will scratch the surface, which is why this method is only suitable for outdoor use. Tip: Instead of a putty knife, you can also use a glass-ceramic cooktop scraper .
- Sanding: Instead of a putty knife, you can also use a concrete sander for large areas. This is worth it if the paint residue is very firmly adhered and you need to treat large areas. With the concrete sander, you’ll achieve an even and good result. You can rent one from a hardware store or specialty retailer for a fee.
- Note: When working with chemical agents, always wear gloves, safety goggles, and a respirator. Old paint in particular may contain substances harmful to your health. Also be mindful of environmental protection and ensure that chemical agents and paint residues do not enter the sewer system.
