Mac: How to extract a RAR archive

by Pramith

If you want to extract a RAR archive on Mac OS X, you’ll need additional software. We’ll introduce you to two programmes.

The Unarchiver: Opening RAR archives on a Mac

Although Windows and Mac OS X can open archives, RAR files are not among them. Free software can help here:

  1. Download The Unarchiver and install the application.
  2. When you launch it for the first time, you can choose whether you always want to extract the archives to the same folder or whether you want to be asked each time.
  3. Now select which file formats The Unarchiver should open. Tick ‘RAR Archive’ here, as well as any other formats you require.
  4. If you now open the RAR archive you want, it will automatically open in The Unarchiver.
  5. Select all the files with the mouse and click the “Extract” button in the bottom right-hand corner of the window.
  6. The RAR archive will then be extracted. Depending on its size, this may take a few moments.

UnRarX: Opening RAR files on Mac OS X

Alternatively, you can use other software. The UnRarX programme is also available free of charge.

  1. Install UnRarX and then open the desired RAR archive by double-clicking on the file.
  2. Confirm the process by clicking the ‘Extract’ button. This will extract the RAR archive into the same folder.
  3. Tip: If there are many files in the archive, you should move the RAR file to a separate folder first.
