These are the starters for Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves

With Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves the new Pokémon generation has revealed its first faces: Braubel, the Grass Chick, Pomfifi, the Fire Pup, and Gekkua, the Water Gecko. The trio is reminiscent of classic starter combinations from previous generations—both in type and character design.

Here they are:

  • Braubel (Eng. Browt) – a Grass-type chick, apparently based on a small bird or chicken.
  • Pomfifi (English: Pombon) – a Fire-type puppy, that is, an energetic miniature Spitz with a fiery personality.
  • Gekkua (Eng. Gecqua) – a Water-type gecko, inspired by a small lizard or salamander species.

Braubel (Grass-type starter)

With its distinctive leaf-eyebrows and a name likely derived from “brow” and “sprout,” Browt resembles a grumpy little chick that has just “sprouted” from the grassy ground. In a potential German version, a name like “Braubel” would elegantly capture this theme, as it evokes both “eyebrow” and the idea of a plant or bud.

Accordingly, the community speculates that his evolution could lead from a clumsy grass chick to a proud, larger bird or forest guardian, where the leaves above his eyes become a central design feature and perhaps even a sort of “helmet” or “cap.”

Pomfifi (Fire Starter)

Pombon is often interpreted as a fiery Pomeranian—small, fluffy, and full of energy, with the potential to develop a spectacular mane of flames. A hypothetical name like “Pomfifi” would retain the “Pom-” from Pomeranian and combine it with a playful sound that fits well with a cute early evolutionary stage. Based on previous Fire-type starters, it’s reasonable to speculate that Pombon/Pomfifi will evolve from a playful fire puppy through a dynamic, youthful intermediate stage into a larger, lion-like creature with an imposing fiery mane, perhaps geared toward speed or an aggressive attack style.

Gekkua (Water Starter)

Gekkua immediately reminds many fans of Memmeon from Pokémon Sword and Shield, as both are small, blue water reptiles that exude a certain vulnerability. A name like “Gekkua” would carry the gecko motif directly in its name while retaining the soft, almost shy sound that fits well with a reserved Water-type starter. Inspired by Memmeon’s evolution into Intelleon, the community speculates that Gekkua will transform from a timid, small gecko into a sleek, significantly more confident Water-type lizard that might grow into a spy, ninja, or acrobatic role—possibly with a secondary type like Ghost or Dragon to underscore its transformation from “cute and insecure” to “cool and specialized.”

Whether these theories are correct remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the new starters bring a breath of fresh air and new waves to the Pokémon world. When Pokémon Winds and Waves was announced, players were shocked after Game Freak revealed that the release date would be 2027.
