What is a Steam Deck? It’s easy to explain: Valve’s mini PC is primarily a powerful gaming handheld.

What is a Steam Deck? The Handheld Explained

With the Steam Deck, Valve presents a handheld that uses the developer’s eponymous digital distribution platform.

  • The Steam Deck is, so to speak, a mobile gaming PC in a format similar to the Nintendo Switch. It has a battery that is supposed to last four to eight hours, depending on the game and graphics intensity, making it suitable for travellers.
  • Steam is pre-installed on the console and players only need to log in to access their game library. Afterwards, all functions of the software are available as usual. New games can either be downloaded directly or loaded onto the handheld via a storage medium.
  • Functions such as Steam Chat and cloud saves, for example, are part of the scope of the software. This allows you to switch between the PC and the Steam Deck without having to start over. The stream function allows you to stream games from your PC to your Steam Deck for more convenient gaming.
  • The Steam Deck has a built-in controller and multiple touchpads. It is still possible to connect other peripherals such as gamepads or mouse and keyboard. This is possible either via Bluetooth or a docking station.
  • The Steam is available directly from Valve in different memory sizes: 64 gigabytes (eMMC), 256 gigabytes (NVMe SSD) and 512 gigabytes (NVMe SSD). The storage can be upgraded as desired up to 2 terabytes.
