Condensation on the window: causes and tips

If you experience frequent condensation on your window, it could be related to excessive humidity. Especially if the condensation occurs regularly in large quantities, the risk of mould in the flat is high.

Possible causes of condensation on the window

If high humidity prevails in the flat, water droplets form on the window in the early morning hours, especially on cold winter days.

  • The air humidity rises, especially at high room temperatures, because warm air can store more moisture.
  • If cooler weather prevails outside, the window panes are cool. When the moist air comes into contact with the cold window pane, it cools down and the water settles on the pane.
  • Condensation water that settles in the cracks of old window frames or in wall cracks, for example, promotes mould growth.
  • Small amounts of condensation that occasionally occur on the window, on the other hand, are not problematic.

Always wipe away condensation water

If you discover condensation on the window or window frame, be sure to wipe it off.

  • Always wipe off condensation with a dry cloth. If you do not do this, dark spots will gradually form on the silicone joints. This is mould. You can no longer remove it so easily.
  • Aerate several times a day for ten to fifteen minutes. It is best to open opposite windows in the home so that the damp air is drawn out with the draught.
  • Check the humidity in the flat with a hygrometer. The ideal humidity in bedrooms, for example, is between 40 and 60 percent. The room temperature should not be more than 18 to 20 degrees.
  • Open the windows after showering and cooking. Steam should be drawn out of the home so as not to remain in the home.
  • If possible, do not hang your laundry in the flat. If this is not possible, ventilate sufficiently while the laundry is drying in the room.
  • If, despite everything, too much condensation collects on the windows, replacing the windows can also be a solution. New windows are tighter and do not let moisture into the interior.
