The 504 Error with the title Gateway Timeout indicates that you did not receive a timely response from the destination server. This can be due to several reasons
504 Error: Troubleshoot network problems
In most cases, resetting the current page in the browser is sufficient to fix the 504 Error. If this does not work, take a look at the following solutions:
- Often the network devices are the problem for the timeout. Restart your router, mobile WLAN modem or internet connection on the terminal device.
- Another problem is a possible server overload due to high traffic or problems with the data upload on the part of the operator. Find out directly from the site operator or via information portals such as Downdetector whether the site is currently unavailable.
- Furthermore, an update of the server may be taking place at the moment, which causes the timeout. You must allow for a waiting period before the page can be reached again.
Other causes for the error
As with Error 404, there are other causes that can trigger the 504 Error:
- Your proxy settings can cause the gateway timeout. Check the proxy server configurations or select another one to get access to the desired page.
- It may help if you change the DNS server to prevent a timeout. Often these problems can occur when the page has not yet set up properly after a host or server change. The problem may then resolve itself over time.
- Check your firewall configurations. If they are set incorrectly, a gateway timeout can also occur.
