The right clothes for the job interview – the best tips

by Pramith

The famous first few seconds are especially decisive for the job interview – all the more important is the right clothing. Of course, no general recommendation can be made here, but there are some guidelines that are valid for almost all job interviews. In the following, we have compiled the most important tips for you.

This is what you should keep in mind when dressing for the job interview

As different as the various jobs and companies are, so are the expectations that the respective hiring managers have for appropriate clothing. Therefore, you will have to do a little research yourself to find out which dress code is appropriate in the respective company.

  • As a general rule, whether casual or more conventional, clothing should always be very clean and neat. Whether it’s the jeans of a software developer or the suit of a banker.
  • As a rule, you are always right with muted colours and depending on the industry and position you are applying for, this is even expected. You can’t go wrong with anthracite, grey and black and a white shirt or blouse.
  • If you have chosen a costume, the skirt should go at least to the knee. Always wear matching silk tights with it,
    • With trousers, make sure that the stockings are long enough so that the legs are always covered, even if you cross your legs, for example. This also applies to men. It goes without saying that the stockings should be a dark shade and colour-coordinated with the trousers.
    • The stockings are in well-kept shoes that definitely do not have worn soles and are preferably of a higher quality. The colour of the shoes should of course match the rest of the outfit. Female applicants should make sure that the heel is not too high. In addition, the shoes should be closed, i.e. no sandals or peeptoes.
    • If you manage to integrate the shoes into your outfit with the help of accessories, you will round off your attire for the job interview harmoniously. For example, you can achieve a harmonious look by matching the shoes, belt and/or handbag exactly.
      • Other than that, the general rule when it comes to accessories is: less is more. In addition, your accessories should be of high quality to add the finishing touch to the outfit. This can be a chic wristwatch, as well as a charming piece of jewellery or a noble silk scarf. Depending on your job requirements, the accessory may also be a little more extravagant.
      • Tip: Only wear clothes that you visibly feel comfortable in. If you have bought the clothes exclusively for your interview, you should have worn the outfit at least once before the interview so that you can get used to it. Otherwise you may quickly come across as wooden and inauthentic rather than confident.

How to make it work at the job interview

It’s not just your clothes that play an important role in those first crucial seconds of the job interview.

      • Deodorant and perfume or aftershave should be applied very discreetly so as not to appear obtrusive
      • If you have to go to the hairdresser’s, do it one or two weeks before the application date. This way you will get used to the new hairstyle and still have enough time to correct any miscuts.
        • Groomed hands and nails are of course also a must. If you do apply nail polish, don’t use dark or garish red, only subtle colours.
