WLAN is particularly convenient in a motorhome, especially if you urgently need the Internet while on the road. You can get quite good WLAN routers and outdoor antennas from specialist dealers, with which you can also establish a good connection with a hotspot that is a little further away.
WLAN in a motorhome – you should pay attention to this
The WLAN routers, just like the outdoor antennas, are available in a wide range of price classes. Depending on the range, you can expect to pay upwards of 50 euros. Especially if you travel a lot with your camper van, it is worthwhile to use higher-quality outdoor antennas and WLAN routers.
- When making your choice, however, you should bear in mind that you will not usually get a pitch in the immediate vicinity of a hotspot. To overcome a somewhat greater distance without problems, you need correspondingly powerful devices.
- As a rule, the WLAN antenna is placed on the roof of the motorhome. It therefore makes sense to look for a particularly stable and weather-resistant WLAN antenna. This is especially true if you like to travel in winter.
- For coordinated and more powerful complete packages that include both the WLAN router and the antenna, you have to dig a little deeper into your pocket. Prices are around 250 euros, but in return you have a range that extends over several kilometres.
Setting up WiFi in your motorhome
You basically set up your mobile WLAN router the same way you set up your router at home. The only difference is that you first insert a SIM card into the corresponding slot of the router.
- After you have made sure that the WLAN function is activated on your computer, go to Start☻Control Panel☻Network and Internet. Alternatively, go to Start☻Settings☻Network and Internet.
- Under “Network and Sharing Centre”, select “Connect to a network”. Then click on the corresponding WLAN router.
- Finally enter the security key. You can usually find the security key on the underside of the WLAN router.
- Tip: If your WLAN router has a WPS button and your notebook is WPS-enabled, you do not have to enter the security key manually. Simply press the WPS button on the router until a connection is established with the computer. The security key is then entered automatically.
