iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular: What Is It?

by Pramith

Every child knows what an iPad is, but what is a Cellular model? These are different versions of the device.

What is Cellular? Mobile Internet with the iPad

  • Simply put, in the context of the iPad, “Cellular” means that with a compatible mobile data plan and an associated SIM card or eSIM, you can stay connected on the go, just like with a smartphone.
  • Another technical difference: Only the Cellular model features a full-fledged GPS module (A-GPS and GLONASS). This allows you to determine your location precisely—which is important for navigation apps, mapping applications, or outdoor activities. The Wi-Fi-only model, on the other hand, uses only Wi-Fi positioning, which is significantly less accurate.
  • The Cellular model is generally about 150 to 200 euros more expensive than the standard iPad. This premium is due to the additional cellular hardware and enhanced functionality.
  • You can recognize cellular iPads by the black cover on the top of the back. The antenna is hidden underneath.
