Reset PlayStation 4 to factory settings – here’s how

by Pramith

If you want to reset your PlayStation 4 to factory settings, it only takes a few clicks. It makes sense to do this, for example, if you want to sell the console.

Resetting the PlayStation 4 to factory settings – the preparation

There are several reasons for resetting the PlayStation 4.

  • If the console does not function as it should and other measures do not lead to the desired success, a reset may be a possible solution.
  • In this case, however, a complete deletion of your data is not necessary.
  • Nevertheless, it is recommended to make a backup of the PS 4 beforehand.

The situation is different if you want to sell the console. To ensure that no one can access your data later, you should completely reset the PlayStation 4 to factory settings.

How to reset the PlayStation 4 to factory settings

As mentioned earlier: If resetting to factory settings is a PS 4 problem solver, back up your data beforehand.

  • You can find the option to reset to factory settings in the system settings of the PlayStation 4.
  • Select the option “Initialisation” here. It is the last item in the list.
  • You will be presented with three options: you can reset the learning dictionary, restore the default settings or initialise the PS 4.
  • Restoring the default settings will reset all the settings you have made and delete your user accounts. However, the games will not be deleted.
  • If you want to prepare your PS4 for sale, select the option “Initialise PS 4” for complete deletion.
  • In the next step, you have the choice between “Quick” and “Full”. To ensure that there is really no more personal data on the PS 4, select “Full” and then click on “Initialise”.
  • It takes quite a while for the PlayStation 4 to reset to factory settings. If you then restart the console, the PlayStation 4 will be back in the same state as when you bought it new.
